EMFs & Electro-Pollution: Understanding the Invisible

What Is Electro-Pollution?

We've been talking about electromagnetic fields — EMFs — for decades now. But I find the word electro-pollution more honest. It does what good language should do: it tells you something true about the nature of the thing.


Pollution isn't just a substance. It's a substance in the wrong concentration, in the wrong place, interacting with systems that weren't designed to handle it in that form. Air is essential to life. Air thick with particulate matter is a different proposition. Water sustains everything. Water carrying industrial runoff is something else entirely.


Electro-pollution works the same way. Electromagnetic fields are part of the natural world — the earth generates them, our bodies generate them, light is electromagnetic radiation. What's new isn't the phenomenon. What's new is the density, the relentlessness, and the particular frequencies we've introduced into the environment in the last hundred years, and especially the last thirty.


That distinction matters. Because if the problem were electromagnetic fields themselves, we'd be in trouble far beyond anything technology created. But if the problem is character — the quality and coherence of what we're living within — then that's a problem we can actually work with.


Where Does It Come From?

The short answer is: everywhere, and increasingly so. Before you've had your first cup of coffee, you've already moved through half a dozen fields — the router, the phone charging by the bed, the smart meter cycling on the other side of the wall. By the time the day is properly underway, the signals layering through a typical home are nearly impossible to map.


I'm not saying this to alarm you. I'm saying it because I think it's important to be honest about the landscape before we talk about navigating it. If your strategy for dealing with electro-pollution depends on eliminating exposure, the world as it's currently built is going to defeat that strategy. Not because the concern isn't valid — it is — but because the environment has changed faster than avoidance can keep up with.


Understanding where it comes from is useful. But what I find more useful is understanding what it does — and what we might do in response.

What Invisible Actually Looks Like

Electromagnetic fields behave like ripples on water. A single source creates a single, predictable pattern. But in a typical home — with its router, smart meter, devices, and wiring all running simultaneously — those patterns interact. They amplify. They interfere. They create an environment that no single source could produce on its own.

What Does the Science Say?

Here's where I'll be straightforward with you: the science is genuinely unsettled, and I think that's worth saying plainly rather than papering over.


The WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies radiofrequency electromagnetic fields as a Group 2B possible carcinogen. That sounds alarming until you learn that Group 2B is the category for things where evidence of harm exists but isn't yet conclusive — a category that includes, among other things, coffee and aloe vera extract. The classification reflects honest uncertainty, not a verdict.


What About Safety Limits?

One question worth asking is: what are the official safety limits actually protecting against? Most national governments and telecommunications regulators base their exposure standards on guidelines from ICNIRP — the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection. Those limits are designed around a specific harm: the point at which electromagnetic radiation heats biological tissue. That's a real concern. 


But it's a narrow one. It says nothing about chronic, low-level exposure over months or years. It doesn't address the biological responses that research is increasingly documenting at levels well below the thermal threshold. Building Biology guidelines, developed independently and grounded in the precautionary principle, set their thresholds four orders of magnitude lower — not because the science is settled, but because when the science is unsettled, the more cautious standard seems like the wiser one to work from.


What the research does consistently show — across many studies and many contexts — is that biological systems respond to electromagnetic fields. Exposure isn't neutral. The body notices. What the research hasn't resolved is the precise mechanism, the threshold at which response becomes harm, or why some people are profoundly and immediately affected while others seem to move through the same environment without obvious difficulty.


That last question is one I find particularly interesting, because I think it points toward something the standard research framework hasn't fully accounted for. We tend to measure exposure — how much, how often, how close. Science doesn't yet have good tools for measuring the quality of what we're exposed to. And I suspect that's where a significant part of the answer lives. That's the beauty of BioGeometry® – its ability to measure that component.


The science isn't finished. What we can do, right now, is work thoughtfully with what we know — and stay honest about what we don't.


Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS)

Some people know immediately when something is off. They walk into a room and feel it — a low hum of unease, a headache that wasn't there before, a fatigue that doesn't make sense given how well they slept. They leave the environment and it lifts. They've learned, often through years of trial and error, to trust that signal.


The medical and scientific community has had a complicated relationship with this experience. The WHO acknowledges electromagnetic hypersensitivity as a real and sometimes disabling condition, while also noting that controlled studies haven't been able to consistently link reported symptoms to measurable EMF exposure. That gap between lived experience and laboratory confirmation has left a lot of people feeling dismissed — told that what they're feeling isn't real, or isn't caused by what they think it's caused by.


I'd like to offer a different way of holding that tension.


The fact that we don't yet have electronic instruments sensitive enough to measure what the body is detecting doesn't mean the body is wrong. It may mean our instruments are behind. The body has been navigating electromagnetic environments for far longer than we've had equipment to study them. That kind of sensitivity — refined over millennia — deserves more respect than it typically gets in a clinical setting.


Whether you identify as electromagnetically sensitive or not, the question worth asking is the same: what is the quality of the environment I'm living and working within, and is it supporting me or quietly working against me? EHS makes that question urgent and undeniable. For others, it's more subtle. But the question belongs to all of us.


A Different Approach: Harmonization Over Avoidance

Everything we've looked at so far points toward the same conclusion: the environment has changed, the science is catching up, and avoidance — while not without value — isn't a complete answer. So what is?
